“White, Whiteness and Race in Contemporary Art“

The “White” show at the International Center of Photography, curated by Maurice Berger, posed the challenge of the white gallery wall as an institutional norm and problematic context.
The relative whiteness of the walls was modulated according to a figure/ground allusion to the conical projection of the gallery’s lights onto the works.
Sometimes lighter is projected and sometimes darker.
